Best Way to Learn English

Ditch the old-fashioned methods of learning a language and start learning languages in the way you want to learn them.  The sooner you take control of your language-learning journey, the faster you will learn the English language.

Gone are the days of learning languages by working from the bottom up.  You no longer need to start by learning the grammar rules and endless lists and lists of vocabulary to learn English.  In this blog, we will show you ways to change up your English learning journey to keep yourself motivated and to speak English fast.

Why You Should Learn the English Language

The English language has become the global language.  When you know English, you open doors to every aspect of your life from travelling through to your business goals.  There are very few reasons not to learn English.  In addition to gaining access to countless movies, series and podcasts, learning languages is also great for your mind.  Studies have proven that people who are bilingual and multilingual slow down the brain ageing process in old age.

10 Best Ways for Learning English Language

The trouble with learning a new language on our own is that we learn the words of the new language and try to apply them to the rules of our mother-tongue language.  When learning English, this results in using English words with incorrect grammar structures and forming the wrong collocations.  Prepositions, for example, are different in every language and if you try to directly translate from your mother-tongue language into English then you will form bad habits.

Don’t waste time learning English in the wrong way.  Start by exposing yourself to and immersing yourself in the English language every day and you will see results quickly.

Listen To Anything And Everything In English

The best way to start learning a language is to listen to it.  This will show you how to use the language correctly from the beginning.  It’s ineffective to learn a language from the bottom up.  The bottom-up technique is starting with individual words and grammar rules and then working your way up from there.  This is what forms bad habits that become incredibly difficult to break.

Rather start from the top and work your way down - in the same way, you learn a language when you’re a baby.  Expose yourself to the language by throwing yourself in the deep end and you will learn to swim.

Make Mistakes And Learn From Them

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.  The biggest thing that holds language learners back from learning a language is the fear of failure.  However, if we don’t learn from our mistakes then we won’t ever improve.  Language is not a theoretical subject.  We can know as much as we like about a language but if we’re too afraid to use it then we won’t ever have a practical working knowledge of the language.  The only way to learn is to make mistakes (and lots of them).

Ask Questions

If you hear a word or grammar structure used in a way that you are not familiar with, then ask how it is being used and why it was used differently.  Words have many different meanings and grammar structures can be used in many different ways so it’s best to ask questions whenever you are unsure.  It is hugely beneficial to be active in your language learning journey.  Find what you need to know and then ask questions until you understand it.

Start With Things That Interest You

Learn English for the purposes that interest you.  If you enjoy watching sports then watch sports with English commentary.  If you enjoy watching movies then watch movies to learn English.  Knowing a language is a practical skill that must be relevant in your day-to-day life.  Learning English via pathways that interest you will also ensure that you have the language to discuss topics that interest you.  It will also help to keep you motivated to keep learning English.

Make English A Part Of Your Daily Life

Learn English by reading, writing, hearing and speaking English every day.  Writing in English can be intimidating, however, starting by writing things like to-do lists and grocery lists in English will help develop your language skills.  Additionally, it’s a great idea to get into the habit of writing about your day in English at the end of every day.  To write well, you need to read in English too.  Find books suitable for your level and read to learn new vocabulary and expand your understanding of the English language.

You can also learn English by listening to podcasts and watching movies in English.  Practice speaking to improve your English skills by speaking English to yourself and speaking English with a friend.

Find An English Speaking Partner

A native English speaking partner is a fantastic resource for learning English.  A native English speaker will be able to correct your errors and help you speak English fluently fast.

Learn Actively

Take notes, ask questions, and actively create language to learn English effectively and efficiently.  The best thing that you can do is identify your language strengths and weaknesses and work hard to strengthen your weaknesses.  The more active you are in your learning process, the easier the learning process will be.

Learn Passively

It’s also important to find ways to expose yourself to the English language and immerse yourself in English without actively learning.  Our brains do a lot of work when we hear a language.  You might not think that you are learning but you will be surprised by how much work your brain puts into decoding the language when you listen to it passively.

Set A Goal

There is nothing quite as motivating as learning for a purpose.  If you want to truly motivate yourself to learn English then sign up for an English test or book a holiday in an English-speaking country.  A goal will help you keep your eye on the prize.

Blend Your Learning

Learn in the classroom and learn outside of the classroom too.  There are benefits to both of these learning styles.  If you focus too much on learning a language then you will likely burn out when you run out of steam.  If you only rely on the immersion technique to learn a language then you may struggle when using grammar and vocabulary in the correct ways.  A mix of these two techniques will ensure you get a well-rounded understanding of the English language.
